Advocacy is a Part of Everything We Do at Baylor Law School.
From your first quarter, you won’t just study the law—you’ll practice it. In classes like Torts, Contracts, and Property, you’ll also be sharpening your legal writing skills, preparing you to advocate effectively in any area of law. Your first big challenge? The Harvey M. Richey Moot Court Competition, where every first-year student steps into the courtroom for their first advocacy showdown.
By your second year, you’ll have the chance to represent Baylor Law School in moot court, mock trial, client counseling, negotiations, and transactional competitions—often more than one. This means you’ll gain hands-on experience in multiple styles of advocacy, building confidence, versatility, and a skill set that stands out.
Practice Court: Trial by Fire
Every law school in the country offers trial advocacy courses. Baylor Law School is the only law school that requires every third-year student to go through Practice Court—our legendary, two-quarter, four-course immersion in real-world trial work. Students deliver opening statements. Master direct and cross-examinations. Conduct voir dire. Handle bench hearings and depositions. And try at least three full cases in front of seasoned trial lawyers.
Built and refined for over 100 years, Practice Court isn’t a classroom exercise; it’s the real thing. It brings the entire law school experience together and pushes students to perform at the highest level.
Baylor Lawyers leave law school fully prepared—not just to begin their careers, but to step into a courtroom and succeed from day one.
