Field Placement Opportunities
Through its network of prosecutors, Baylor Law School offers for-credit field placement opportunities designed to immerse future Baylor Lawyers into the day-to-day workings of a local prosecutor’s office. Every field placement is slightly different, depending on the needs of the locally elected prosecutor.
Most offer students the chance to build their practical skills in case evaluation, witness interviews, gathering discovery, formulating plea offers, and doing legal research. Students also participate in various criminal court proceedings under attorney supervision.
In addition to their work in the prosecutor’s office, students must complete specific academic tasks reported to Baylor Law’s Career Development Office and their faculty advisor. These unique opportunities help our students gain valuable work experience and build their networks that further their chances of becoming a prosecutor after graduation.
Baylor Law School currently has externships in three local prosecutorial offices:
- the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office,
- the Limestone County Attorney’s Office, and
- the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas in Waco.
We also offer Judicial field placements in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas (Waco Division) and several local courts.
Baylor Law School recently expanded criminal field placement opportunities by establishing a program with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Texas, in Waco.
Students can also work with the Career Development Office to create their own prosecutorial externship.
