Counseller's Corner - Season 3, Episode 2:  Nafis Muhammad, a first-year student at Baylor Law School, has always been drawn to work that protects others. His journey began as a teenager when he became an EMT, followed by his service as a firefighter and paramedic. In this episode of Counseller’s Corner, Dean Jeremy Counseller interviews Nafis about his transition from first responder to law student. They discuss the lessons he has learned about performing under pressure in law school, as well as their shared interests in music, intramural football, life in Waco, and their mutual appreciation for the word puzzle game, Connections.

For 2L Mari Sanchez, advocacy begins long before a lawyer enters the courtroom. It starts earlier, in the communities that lawyers call home and with the people they encounter every day. This perspective shaped a recent Baylor Law School Professional Development Program that celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. U.S. Magistrate Judges Laura Enriquez, JD ’96, and Ignacio Torteya III, BA ’92, JD ’95, joined McAllen Municipal Judge Lauren Sepulveda, JD ’11, for a conversation on access to justice, representation, and service.

Baylor Law School students Quinn Murphy and Sydney Skinner claimed top honors in the 2026 Durham, Pittard & Spalding, LLP Fall Moot Court Competition, concluding nearly three weeks of competition that challenged students to sharpen their oral advocacy skills while defending their arguments under pressure.
