Welcome to Baylor Law School: Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow
At Baylor Law School, our commitment to excellence in legal education has been a tradition since 1857. Long before the term "practice-ready" became a buzzword, we pioneered the approach of equipping students with a unique blend of analytical, problem-solving, and professional skills to prepare them for the dynamic world of law practice.
SETTING THE STANDARD
As a leading voice in the national conversation on legal education, Baylor Law School continues to set the pace as one of the premier teaching law schools for future practitioners. Our achievements speak volumes – ranked third in Advocacy by U.S. News & World Report, number one in the percentage of Super Lawyers by the National Jurist, and consistently boasts one of the highest bar passage rates in America. Our rigorous program produces outstanding lawyers, making Baylor Law graduates sought after by courts, businesses, government agencies, and communities. Law firms specifically seek out our graduates for their real-world skills, preparation, poise, and proficiency.
LEADING THE WAY SINCE 1857
Formally organized in 1857, Baylor Law School has a rich history as the second university west of the Mississippi to teach law and the first official law school in Texas. Our pioneering spirit led to the introduction of the “Practice Court” in the 1920s, a revolutionary concept that became the benchmark for practical training among law schools. Today, Baylor Law is recognized as "the Marine Corps of law schools,” leading the way in legal education. Our carefully calibrated curriculum, rooted in a strong foundation of legal theory, provides the nation’s most in-depth training ground for the practice of law. Students develop the character, maturity, and skills needed to lead clients and become influential leaders in their professions and communities.
AHEAD OF THE CURVE
Baylor Law School boasts one of the most magnificent, spacious, and technologically advanced facilities. The Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center opened in 2001, is architecturally stunning, spanning three levels and 128,000 square feet. Situated on the beautiful campus of Baylor University, on the banks of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas, our state-of-the-art facilities reflect our commitment to excellence in legal education.
THE MISSION OF BAYLOR LAW SCHOOL
As the economic model of law firms evolves, Baylor Law School stands at the forefront, addressing the changing landscape of legal practice. Our mission is to bridge the gap between theory and practice, recognizing the need for fundamental skills in today’s legal profession. Firms seek graduates who are not just well-versed in legal theory but also possess the practical training required to excel in the workforce.
