Baylor Law Secures Another Two-Year, $135,000 Grant from the Texas Access to Justice Foundation to Support the Veterans Clinic

The Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF) has announced its continued support of Baylor Law’s Veterans Clinic program. This grant allows Baylor Law and its Veterans Clinic to continue its monthly clinical program for local veterans to receive legal advice and counsel from faculty and local attorneys with assistance from law students. The monthly legal advice clinics provide legal assistance to low-income Texas veterans with basic civil legal problems such as family law, landlord-tenant issues, bankruptcy, and estate matters.

The Texas Access to Justice Foundation has supported Baylor Law’s Veterans Clinic since its inception in 2012. The clinic has provided legal assistance to over 1,600 veterans and their families during that time. The clinic is a training ground for Baylor Law students who choose to volunteer their time in serving the veteran community. These students acquire hands-on experience in client counseling, estate planning, and litigation.

“Baylor Law is honored to again receive support from the Texas Access to Justice Foundation,” stated Professor of Law Bridget Fuselier, the founder and executive director of the Veterans Clinic, “We are incredibly appreciative of the foundation's continued support of our work. This grant will assist us in providing much-needed legal services to Central Texas’ growing veteran community.”

Veterans Clinics are held one Friday a month from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Heart of Texas Veterans One Stop, 2010 La Salle Avenue, Waco, Texas 76706.

"Many of our local veterans are facing potential legal issues and don’t know where to turn,” stated clinic director Josh Borderud, who has directed Baylor Law’s clinic initiatives since 2016, “Some issues can be resolved with simple advice and guidance on how to proceed, while others are facing more complicated challenges that need full legal representation. Without the Baylor Law Veterans Clinic, these veterans and their families would be facing these challenges alone."

It gives our students front-line experience, and it allows us, in a small way, to tangibly thank our armed services personnel for their service to our nation.”
