Professor Trail earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1972 after receiving a B.A. in 1969 from Michigan State University and graduating as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps in Washington, D.C. In 1975, Trail joined the Civil Division of the Department of Justice. In 1977, he moved to Texas and entered private practice concentrating on complex litigation. In 1982, Professor Trail joined the faculty at Baylor Law. Professor Trail is the Darrell L. Keith Professor of Law and Medicine and is the author of casebooks on the subjects of Federal Courts, Health Care Litigation, and Health Law. Professor Trail has taught twelve separate courses of Baylor Law and taught Contracts I, Contracts II, and Professional Responsibility.

Professor Trail served as Chair of the Law School Building Committee. As Chair, Professor Trail assisted Dean Toben in raising the funds necessary for the project and served as the "owners" representative for the project dealing with the contractor and project architect. The project opened "on time and on budget" and has received numerous awards for excellence in design. After completing his service as chair of the building committee, Professor Trail received training as a mediator/arbitrator and now serves as a mediator and arbitrator in a wide variety of cases.
