Hundreds of Central Texans Participate in the 18th Annual The People’s Law School
On February 11, 2023, Baylor Law hosted the 18th annual People’s Law School, a half-day event offering free courses designed to make the law more accessible. More than 200 participants came to Baylor Law for the first in-person People’s Law School since 2020

On Saturday, February 11th, 2023, hundreds of people visited the Umphrey Law Center to participate in Baylor Law’s popular People’s Law School, a free half-day event designed to educate consumers about their legal rights and to make the law “user-friendly.”
Volunteer attorneys and other experts offered 18-hour-long courses. Participants could attend up to three throughout the day. Along with the topics on significant current events like ‘Blockchain and Digital Assets,’ ‘Side Gigs and Tax Traps for the Unwary,’ and ‘Navigating the Court System from Arrest to Prosecution,’ other courses focused on other vital issues such as family law, landlord & tenants’ rights, how the Supreme Court operates, and many others. In addition to the courses, all attendees received copies of the U.S. Constitution and other giveaways. Baylor Law offers this community-focused event to the public free of charge thanks to the generous support of many local associations, businesses, law firms, and media entities.

“Here at Baylor Law, we strongly emphasize to our students that the legal profession is a service profession. Lawyers are called to be servant leaders in our community and Baylor Law takes our service mission very seriously,” noted Director of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs and Clinical Lecturer Josh Borderud during his opening remarks. Borderud, who also serves on the City of Waco City Council added, “whether it is hosting foster care adoptions at Adoption Day, making the law accessible here at the People’s Law School, or drafting wills for veterans and first responders through our clinical programs, we are proud to serve our community.”
“I hadn’t been able to attend [The People’s Law School] for a few years since I moved away from Waco,” noted attendee David Clark, “Now that I’m back, I’m so glad I came, I only wish you offered this more often so I could attend more of the sessions.”
