First Wellness-Focused Program of 2022 A Success

More than 100 Baylor Law students recently attended a special presentation by Adjunct Professor of Law Walt Shelton titled “Daily and Periodic Practices to Enhance your Life Quality: Staying Focused and Keeping Balanced.” The virtual session on mindfulness and balance, along with a signed copy of Professor Shelton’s latest book ‘The Daily Practice of Life: Practical Reflections Toward Meaningful Living,’ was made possible thanks to a recent grant to the law school from the Texas Bar Foundation to implement comprehensive mental health and wellness offerings at the Law School.

Hosted as part of the law school’s Professional Development Program, the session was the first of several programs that Baylor Law has planned for 2022. The goal is to provide impactful and educational presentations and workshops that emphasize the importance of students’ overall well-being and encourage more robust conversations surrounding mental health and wellness.

Since 1990, Professor Shelton has taught multiple courses at Baylor Law on environmental and water law, supervised field placements at federal and state agencies, directed independent studies, and sponsored the Baylor Environmental and Natural Resource Law Society. He maintains his private practice and has been recognized by his peers for excellence in practice, including being named in The Best Lawyers in America for the past 20 years. In addition, he is one of the most-read faith columnists in Texas. The book at the center of this presentation won a Nautilus Silver Award. Professor Shelton’s next book, Authentic Living in All Seasons: Focused, Fearless, and Balanced will be published later this year.

Professor of Law Bridget Fuselier, who spearheaded the effort to secure the Texas Bar Foundation grant, noted, "Here at the law school, we’re striving to bring issues of mental health and wellness into the open. We want to equip our future Baylor Lawyers to have an ethical and impactful career helping others, while also being mindful of their own mental health and wellness." She added, “Professor Shelton’s presentation was a wonderful addition to our programming and I’m so glad that almost a quarter of our student body was able to attend.”
