Baylor Law Student Amanda Alvez Receives TYLA Scholarship

Baylor Law student Amanda Alvez is one of three recipients of the 2022 Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) Diversity Scholarship. TYLA recently announced the winners of the 2022 Diversity Scholarship, a first-place scholarship of $5,000, $3,000 for second place, and $1,500 for third place. The application was open to all students at any of the ABA-accredited law schools in Texas. For the scholarship selection process, applicants had to answer, “What can the Texas Young Lawyers Association and the State Bar of Texas do to promote and support diversity in the legal profession?” Alvez's answer to that question scored her the first place, $5,000 scholarship.

Alvez, a second-year law student, is no stranger to Baylor Law’s commitment to service and plans to work in some form of public interest law after graduation. “I came to law school committed to helping others. Baylor Law has opened doors to opportunities through its Pro Bono program, and I have worked with asylum seekers and the general Texas public searching for legal assistance.” She added, “I am excited to use my experience and values at my 2L summer internship with Catholic Charities of Central Texas. Helping others brings me so much joy. It’s difficult to imagine working in something else.”

In addition to serving in her church, Alvez volunteers with the Texas Legal Services LiveChat program through Baylor Law, has worked with American Gateways through the Pro Bono Spring Break program with the Texas Access to Justice Commission, has volunteered for Adoption Day, and is currently participating in Baylor Law’s Veterans Clinic.
