Entrepreneurship Clinic Spotlight: Art By Students, LLC
In early 2022, the Baylor Law Entrepreneurship Clinic began working with Dominik Kuhn, a Swiss exchange student in the Entrepreneurship Program at the Baylor Hankamer School of Business. Dominik had an idea to revolutionize how art students take their work from their canvases and send it out into the world. In Dominik’s own words, he set out to create “a place where young artists can take the first step to make a name for themselves.” Art By Students, LLC was born in pursuit of this vision.
Art By Students is an online marketplace where art students can show and sell their work. The website expands the reach of art students by creating a communal space for all rather than confining them to only local buyers or their online presence. On the Art By Students website, artists can create a profile, post their work, and interact with viewers and potential buyers nationwide.
In February 2022, Dominik attended an entrepreneurship workshop at The People’s Law School at Baylor Law. Professor Allen Page, the Clinic’s Director and Managing Attorney, presented at the workshop and talked about the Entrepreneurship Clinic, which was relatively new then. Dominik contacted the Clinic afterward and requested help organizing and setting up his business. He wanted to form an LLC for Art By Students to formalize his new online marketplace and begin helping students by displaying their art.
Dominik attended an initial meeting with the Clinic staff to discuss what entity type and structure made the most sense for his business model. The students in the Clinic quickly began drafting to provide Dominik with a set of initial organizational documents that fit his wishes for Art By Students. They were allowed to form and organize a single-member LLC, which included drafting its organizing documents and seeing the business through filing with the Secretary of State’s office in Texas. Throughout the process, Dominik remained in contact with the staff to provide information and have any questions answered. He expressed his appreciation for the support and advice he received in the initial meeting and throughout the entire process. “As a Swiss, naturally, I am very unfamiliar with the legal system in the USA,” Dominik said, “and the Clinic was able to help me enormously in setting up my LLC.” He concluded his remarks by saying he “heartily recommends” working with the Clinic to anyone looking to start a business.
In the future, Dominik hopes to see Art By Students grow into a flourishing and unique resource for artists all over the United States. In his own words, his goals include “providing a platform for [art students] to present themselves as well as deepening the public’s interest and appreciation for art and culture.” He is looking to support the next generation of artists and to be a driving force in the push to grow the public’s interest in art.
