A Life Changing Experience
Over the years, students who have returned from the program have cited many reasons why The Academy of the Advocate at St Andrews was so impactful. They include:
“It’s Compact.”
Compacted into two weeks, students who participate at the end of the summer program discover they can still do a clerkship in the fall. The program itself offers plenty of time to make friends, take in the culture and explore another part of the world. And with nearly everything in St Andrews within a 10-minute walk, it’s all right there.
“It’s Relevant.”
For those undecided as to whether they want to become a trial or appellate lawyer, the experience offers a great taste of what it’s like. Before they know it, they’re developing case theories, making arguments and trying cases. The skills aspiring advocates develop here, they will build on their entire careers, no matter what area of the law they choose to pursue.
“It’s Intimate.”
With no more than 60 students across the three Schools, every group is small, and every experience meaningful. Here, friendships blossom, fellowship abounds and the nationwide networks students develop pay dividends many years down the line.
“It’s Confidence-Building.”
Students come away with the tools and techniques to present their case with passion, conviction and confidence. For many, it’s the turning point in their decision to pursue a career as a trial or appellate lawyer.
“It’s One-of-a-Kind.”
Most Study Abroad programs are typically led by 1 or 2 faculty members (with around a 30:1 student-to-faculty ratio). Here, the ratio is closer to 3:1, with mentorship and one-on-one access that is virtually unheard of. Students are also amazed to discover that instructors don’t just critique their advocacy skills—they take the time to help students develop them, refine them, and deliver them with confidence. It’s a collaborative experience—with lawyers, judges, professors and students all working together.
“It’s Magical.”
Stepping into St Andrews is like being transported to another place and time. Here, in one of the most beautiful and historic towns in the world, classrooms and libraries give way to study sessions outside, overlooking the ocean. Campfire stories come alive in the ruins of a centuries-old cathedral. And the promise of what it means to become an advocate seeking to make a difference in the lives of others, touches both the head and the heart.
“It’s Worth It.”
Looking back, many students regard their experience at St Andrews as the high-water mark in the law school journey. It’s an experience they will treasure for the rest of their lives.
