WACO, Texas -

For the fifth straight year, Baylor Law’s Legal Clinics will honor the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice of McLennan County’s law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical services. During May, Baylor Law’s Estate Planning Clinic will offer free wills and simple estate planning to police, firefighters, EMTs, and their spouses living or working in McLennan County. In addition to a will, simple estate planning services include a power of attorney, medical power of attorney, declaration of guardian, and directive to physicians.

The Estate Planning Clinic will be setting appointments for personalized estate planning sessions during May. First responders or their spouses can call 254-710-4244 or email LegalClinics@baylor.edu to schedule a consultation beginning on Monday, April 25, 2022. Space is limited to the first 30 respondents.

After the initial appointment, law students will draft the documents under the supervision of Professors Josh Borderud and Tom Featherston. First responders will sign these essential papers at a signing ceremony at Baylor Law a few weeks later.

“It is an absolute honor for Baylor Law to serve our local first responders who tirelessly work the front lines and risk their own safety to care for others in our communities,” noted Dean Brad Toben. “Baylor Law has a deep appreciation for first responders’ services. This clinic is a tangible way for us to thank them for putting their lives on the line for us every day.”

Josh Borderud, Baylor Law’s Director of the Estate Planning Clinic, noted, “Our students look forward to this event every year and are eager to be able to give back to our local first responders.” He added, “Our students gain valuable hands-on experience in drafting documents, and our local first responders have peace of mind knowing that their estate planning is in order.”

May 4 marks International Firefighters Day, May 8-14 is National Police Week, and May 15-21 is National EMS Week.
