Safety, Security, and Emergencies at Baylor Law School
Emergencies are unlikely but can and do happen without warning. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the emergency preparedness documents below. You should know what to do and where to go if the law school encounters an emergency like a fire, severe weather, or extreme situations such as an active shooter scenario.

AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators)
AEDs are located throughout the Law Center and are marked with plastic AED markers to aid in quickly finding them:
- 1st Floor – In the Law Library, behind the circulation desk
- 1st Floor – In the classroom wing near the elevator
- 2nd Floor – Across from Room 234, to the right of the 2nd floor locker room
- 2nd Floor – On the NW Wall (McLane Stadium Side) of the Student Success Center
- 3rd Floor – Near office 314D (Karen Ehgotz's office) - (NOTE: not available after hours)
- 3rd Floor – Inside the Legal Writing Center (Main foyer) - (NOTE: not available after hours)
Stop the Bleed Kits
Stop the Bleed Kits with tourniquets and other devices to control bleeding are located throughout the Law Center:
- 1st floor- In the Student Lounge, 180º from the entrance to the Law School Café
- 1st Floor - In the Law Library, behind the circulation desk
- 1st Floor - In the classroom wing near the elevator
- 2nd Floor - On the white column in the Student Success Center
If a student organization would like to arrange CPR training for law students, please contact the Director of Student Affairs, Katherine Sims.
Seek shelter immediately – in a Severe Weather Shelter Area - when signaled by BaylorAlert! Message, or when instructed to do so by Building Emergency Coordinators.
SEVERE WEATHER SHELTER AREAS AT BAYLOR LAW SCHOOL:
Do not use elevators; avoid all windows, doors, and outside walls.
- Restrooms on all floors (Classroom Wing-all floors, Law Library, and Student Success Center)
- Stairwell 1 (Stairwell by rooms 127 and 236)
- Stairwell 3 (Stairwell outside the Law Library main entrance on the first floor, the Alumni Office on the second floor, and the Federal Government Documents Room on the third floor)
- Café57 (Law School Cafeteria) serving area (Close the doors on either end of the space)
- Law Library Photocopy Room (Room 201) (Outside of the Second-Floor Reading Room)
- I.T. Storage Room (Room 203B) (Behind the I.T. Help Desk in the Student Success Center)
- Dean’s Suite Kitchen (Pantry 218B) (Close the doors on either end of the space.)
- Dean’s Suite Workroom (Room 223) (Close the doors on either end of the space.)
IF OTHER SPACES ARE NOT AVAILABLE:
Use these spaces only as a last resort when other spaces are at full capacity:
- Second-floor hallway of the Academic Wing (Not classrooms)
- Third-floor faculty wing (not faculty offices).
- Study Rooms 203F and 203H (Across from restrooms in the Student Success Center).
- Baylor Law Review Workroom (Room 345D)
- Leave the Law Center immediately when signaled by a fire alarm, BaylorAlert! message, or when instructed by first responders or Building Emergency Coordinators.
- Do not take noncritical items while evacuating
- Use only stairs and avoid elevators
- Move to Evacuation Assembly Point: the walkway near the Mayborn Museum (east of the Baylor Law School Parking Lot).
- Call 254-710-2222 if anyone needs additional assistance
- Do not re-enter the Law Center until the “all clear” is provided by a Building Emergency Coordinator
Shelter in place means to stay indoors and secure yourself within a building during an emergency (e.g., severe weather, active shooter, hazardous materials release).
- Stay Calm: Remain composed to effectively assess the situation.
- Secure Doors: Lock and barricade all doors if possible.
- Close Windows and Curtains: Prevent outside hazards from entering.
- Silence your phone and any electronic devices.
- Use radio or television for updates if safe to do so, or follow messages from BaylorAlert! for further instructions.
- Do not leave your sheltered space until the “all clear” is provided by Baylor Police or a Building Emergency Coordinator
In the case of inclement weather, Baylor Law School will follow the same opening/closing schedule as Baylor University.
- If classes or exams are canceled or delayed, the local media outlets will be contacted by 7:00 a.m. and announce the closing or delay.
- We will attempt to post the closing/delay on the main page of our website, on our Emergency and Closure Information page, and notify all students by email and social media as soon as possible.
- If classes are not canceled but a particular professor needs to cancel, we will attempt to notify students by email.
If classes are not canceled, students are expected to use good judgment to determine if they can safely drive to Baylor Law School. We care about our students’ safety and expect each student to make a prudent decision about attendance in inclement weather.
Baylor University encourages everyone on campus - including students at Baylor Law School - to immediately report crimes and other emergencies to the University Police by calling (254) 710-2222.
