Interviewing Tips

The interview is the most crucial step in the hiring process. It lends depth and personality to the resume. Expect difficult questions. Your response to different situations is being tested. Always be yourself and be prepared to provide thoughtful answers about your career decisions. An interview is a time to determine whether or not this employer will meet your professional needs, just as the employer is attempting to make a similar judgment about you.

The "interview" involves your preparation for the interview, the actual interview, and the follow-up with a thank you letter. Ensure you know about the employer and the position you are interviewing for.

  • Be prepared.
  • Talk about your strengths.
  • Show enthusiasm for the job and the employer.
  • Make an excellent first impression.
  • Develop a rapport with the interviewer.
  • Have questions to ask the interviewer if the opportunity arises.

Review the information below to learn about each step of the interview process, including some sample questions you can expect.

Interview Preparation

1. Learn as much as possible about the employer. There are several resources you can use for this purpose:

  • The Texas Legal Directory (available in the CDO office) contains information regarding the practice areas of an employer and biographical sketches of its attorneys.

  • Firm websites are excellent sources of information, especially for law firm employers. You can learn about the firm's history, practice areas, and the backgrounds of the firm lawyers.
  • Martindale-Hubbell contains information regarding the practice areas of an employer and biographical sketches of its attorneys. You can make specialized sorts and queries by using the Advanced Search button.
  • NALP Legal Employers Guide lists more than 1,000 legal employers, their projected hiring needs, a profile of their practice areas and attorneys, contact person, etc. This is also available as NALPline on Westlaw.
  • You can find information about law firms and lawyers on Bloomberg Law, LexisNexis, and Westlaw.

2. Know your credentials and be able to articulate them.

3. Practice interviewing in a mock interview through the CDO program, with a friend, or in front of the mirror. Rehearse answers to typical interview questions. Know how you will respond if the interviewer begins a question with the words what, why, how, tell me, describe for me, explain, or compare.

4. Present a professional image in dress and general appearance. Dress should be conservative for both men and women. Accessories should be moderate, jewelry spare and understated, shoes shined, and clothing pressed. Hair must be clean and brushed. Hands should be cleaned, and fingernails manicured. Avoid heavy scents.

The Interview

1. Establish good rapport at the outset and maintain it throughout.

  • Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake, a welcoming smile, and a warm greeting.
  • Exhibit a friendly, sincere demeanor combined with enthusiasm.
  • Use a conversational tone throughout the interview.
  • Maintain eye contact and good posture.

2. Carry out your responsibility to establish and maintain a good exchange of information. Interviewers are responsible for the line of questioning, and you are responsible for the content of the conversation.

  • Answer truthfully, consistently, and candidly.
  • Respond with an answer that includes all relevant information.
  • Lead the discussion to your points of strength rather than your weaknesses or limitations.
  • Show a direct relationship between your credentials and the employer's needs.
  • Avoid any conversation that downgrades another employer, a classmate, your school, another school, or any other person or group.

3. Listen attentively.

  • Pay attention to the questions and give responsive answers in a natural flow of conversation. Although you want to be prepared for all types of questions, don't let your answers sound "canned" or scripted.
After the Interview

Record your impressions. Determine if you had a positive or negative impression of the people you met and the position you interviewed for.

Evaluate yourself. If there was "one more thing you wish you had said," try to incorporate that into a thank you note. If you felt that an interview went badly, try to figure out why. If the reason is within your control, change your interview behavior to prevent the problem in the future.

Sample Questions Asked by Interviewers

Predicting every question you may be asked in an interview is impossible. Some interviewers ask very tough and probing questions; others take a more general and laid-back approach. Here are some common questions you may hear:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What would you consider to be your greatest strengths/weaknesses?
  • Why should I hire you?
  • What is the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome in your life/career?
  • What qualities do you possess that make you believe that you will become a successful lawyer?
  • Why did you decide to go to law school? Why did you choose this particular law school?
  • What areas of the law particularly interest you?
  • So far, what is your reaction to law school?
  • What is your GPA and class rank? Could you explain your law school's grading system?
  • What did you learn from participating in moot court/client counseling/mock trial/internship?
  • What is your legal career objective?
  • Why did you decide to sign up for an interview with us? What interests you most about us? What do you know about us?
  • What two or three things are most important to you in a job?
  • What specialties of practice interest you?
  • How much responsibility are you prepared to assume when you begin work?
  • Have you decided on the city where you want to work? Why did you choose that city? Do you have any ties to that city?
  • What are your salary expectations?
  • Is there anything I should know about you that we have not covered? Is there anything about yourself that you would like to add?
Sample Questions to Ask the Interviewer

If you are prepared for your interview, you probably already have some questions you would like to ask. It would be best to ask questions to demonstrate that you have conducted research and know the firm's practice area. Here are some suggested questions for you to consider:

General Questions

  • On what basis will the hiring decision be made?
  • What does your firm look for in a successful candidate?
  • How are decisions made regarding work assignments?
  • To whom will I report?
  • How long has the interviewer been with the employer? Why did the interviewer choose to work for this employer? Why did the interviewer select his/her practice area?
  • What are the selling points of the city? As a place to live? As a place to work?
  • What is special about this firm? What are the advantages of working for a firm the size the interviewer works for?

Questions for Summer Associate Positions

  • What kind of work do summer clerks do? Is there a rotation among departments? If so, how is the choice of department made?
  • What kind of supervision can a summer clerk expect? Is there a formal evaluation process? How is information regarding performance communicated to the clerk?
  • How many summer clerks does the employer expect to have? What percentage of clerks from the last year will be working for the employer in the future?

Questions for Associate Positions

  • How does the employer determine what type of work a beginning attorney is assigned? How is the work supervised? How are the evaluations communicated to the new attorney?
  • How is the new attorney trained? Are there formal training programs?
  • Does the employer require its attorneys to specialize? When and how does specialization occur?
  • What type of clients does the employer have? How soon does a new attorney have direct client contract? How soon is a new attorney expected to develop new clients for the employer?
  • What are the criteria for advancement?
  • What is the target number of billable hours?
  • Does the employer anticipate growth? If so, in what areas?

Questionable Questions

There have been very rare occasions when an employer has asked what appeared to the student to be an inappropriate question regarding family background, ethnic or racial background, marital status, religion, or plans for a family. Employers are quite sensitive to areas of questioning that may be considered inappropriate, and it is unlikely you will encounter such a situation. If you do, you may choose to address the employer's concern, answer the question, or not answer the question.

Contact the CDO if you are presented with a situation involving inappropriate questioning.
