Baylor Law’s Dean Emeritus and M.C. & Mattie Caston Professor of Law, Brad Toben, was recently named a 2023 Champion of Justice recipient by Texas Watch. As a leading non-partisan advocacy organization dedicated to safety, accountability, and justice, Texas Watch annually recognizes a Texas Lawyer and advocate of Seventh Amendment jury rights whose contributions have impacted consumer rights and public safety. Texas Watch bestowed the honor due to Dean Emeritus Toben’s “exemplary service and commitment to legal scholarship and the pursuit of justice.”

John Eddie Williams, Founder and Managing Partner at Williams Hart & Boundas, LLP; Bryan O. Blevins, Jr., Equity Partner at Provost ✯ Umphrey Law Firm, LLP; Steve Harrison, Partner at Harrison Davis Morrison Jones; and John L. (Lin) McCraw, Owner & CEO at McCraw Law Group hosted a luncheon to celebrate Toben’s recognition. As Williams encouraged supporters to attend, Williams said, “The key, I believe, to a lot of Brad’s success is that he is an incredible listener and builds coalitions. He genuinely wants to know what is going on with your life and what is important to you; people trust him. That is the key to Brad’s leadership.” Harrison responded to Toben’s selection during the event by stating, “There are many of us who would like to lead, who might think of ourselves as leaders and leaders of men and women to achieve excellence. Brad intuitively knows that you inspire excellence to achieve excellence, and that’s what he’s done all his life.”  He concluded by noting Toben’s consistent skills of strength, determination, relentlessness, and tenacity.

Since 1998, Texas Watch has fought for Texas families and consumers by advocating for laws that ensure accountability throughout courts and guarantee our constitutional right to trial by jury. With a likeminded interest in the aims of Texas Watch, Patricia Wilson, Interim Dean and the William Boswell Chair of Law, recognized Dean Emeritus Toben’s lasting legacy during her remarks, “Baylor Law’s program instills in our students that the law and their privilege as members of the Bar must be used to serve all the citizens of our state and nation including, most importantly, those who are marginalized. That is Brad Toben’s philosophy, and for that, we are grateful.”

In his acceptance message, Toben shared his regard for the aims of Texas Watch, observing that it is one of the most stalwart protectors of our precious 7th Amendment jury rights.  In addition, he recognized the accomplishments and efforts of Baylor Lawyers throughout Texas and beyond for stepping up in excellence and leadership in the justice system throughout his 31-year tenure as dean of Baylor Law.

Baylor Law congratulates Dean Emeritus Toben as the 2023 Texas Watch Champion of Justice honoree and looks forward to his contributions as he continues his service to Baylor Law.
