Ryan Calvert

Ryan Calvert is the First Assistant District Attorney at the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office. He has served as a prosecutor since graduating from the Texas Tech School of Law in 2002.
For ten years, Ryan served as a prosecutor in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In both 2011 and 2012, Ryan was named Attorney of the Year by the Denton County Crime Victim’s Rights Coalition.
In 2012, Ryan moved to the Bryan/College Station area to join the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office. For ten years, Ryan served in Brazos County, first as
a chief felony prosecutor and later in the appellate section.
On January 1st 2023, Ryan was sworn in as the First Assistant District Attorney in McLennan County, Texas, where he currently supervises a team of 30 prosecutors and support staff.
Ryan is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and has tried approximately 300 cases to juries. Ryan has extensive experience in handling cases involving domestic violence, intoxication crimes, homicide, sex crimes, and child abuse. Ryan has also handled approximately 40 appeals and post-conviction writs.
Outside of the courtroom, Ryan is heavily involved in training prosecutors and law enforcement officers throughout Texas and in other states. Several times a year, Ryan speaks at conferences, professional trainings, and law enforcement agencies. Ryan also frequently speaks to schools and community groups in the Waco area about the criminal justice system.
In 2020, Ryan authored and published a book for the Texas District and County Attorney’s Association (TDCAA) entitled Jury Selection. Ryan has also published multiple articles in The Texas Prosecutor, the Journal for TDCAA. Ryan has served as a member of TDCAA’s Training Committee, and was chairperson of that Committee in 2012.
In 2015, TDCAA presented Ryan with the C. Chris Marshall Distinguished Faculty Award for his outstanding contributions to the education of Texas prosecutors. In 2017, the Alumni Association of the Texas Tech School of Law honored Ryan with its Rising Star Award.
