Student Perspective on the Business Law Boot Camp: Wes McCutcheon

Baylor Law's Business Law Boot Camp is a week-long program that provides Baylor Law students with a practical, deep dive into various areas of law a corporate or business transactional lawyer deals with regularly. Taught by a diverse team of accomplished transactional attorneys, the Boot Camp courses are delivered via both classroom lectures and collaborative exercises.

Wes McCutcheon attended Baylor Law's Business Law Boot Camp in 2022. Read his thoughts on the Boot Camp below.

Why did you apply for the Boot Camp? Did it meet your expectations?

Throughout my time at Baylor Law, my interest in business law has continued to grow with each quarter of classes. A friend of mine attended the Business Law Boot Camp last year and encouraged me to apply this year. I am very thankful for my friend’s encouragement because the Boot Camp has completely exceeded my expectations. Professor Miller and Baylor Law have put together a week that fosters an incredible educational experience for anyone interested in business law.

 What are your thoughts on what you learned during the Boot Camp?

I have enjoyed every moment of my time at the Boot Camp. There is a wide variety of topics that are covered throughout the Boot Camp. Although I have taken some classes involving some of the topics, listening to another attorney’s perspective has allowed me to garner a better understanding of each topic. Additionally, the Boot Camp has provided me a solid foundation for topics that I have not experienced as much in my time at Baylor Law.

 Which classroom session(s) or topic(s) made a particularly strong impression on you, and why?

My favorite session of the Boot Camp was “Financing: Roadmap of a Commercial Loan Transaction” presented by Rick Brophy, Jennifer Lindsey, and Matt Czimskey. This session was my favorite session because a commercial loan transaction considers many different areas within business law and presents a variety of different legal issues that require intuitive thinking. I have always had a strong interest in financing and this lecture fit right into that interest.

 What part of the Boot Camp was most challenging for you?

I found that the family business succession planning session was the most challenging part of the Boot Camp.

 What would you say to a fellow student who is interested in applying for the next Boot Camp?

I would advise any student that has an interest in business law, whether litigation or transactional, to apply to the Business Law Boot Camp. Not only does the Boot Camp provide a valuable learning experience and numerous networking opportunities, but it is also an extremely fun week that you will not regret attending. I promise you will leave the week with a greater sense of pride as a future Baylor Lawyer.

 What comes next for you? Do you think your attendance at the Boot Camp will impact your future plans?

This summer, I am working as a summer clerk for Padfield & Stout, LLP in Fort Worth, Texas before I come back and finish my eighth and ninth quarters with Practice Court. I do not believe that my attendance at the Boot Camp has changed my future plans, but it has impacted my future plans by reaffirming that I want to pursue a practice in business law upon graduation.
