Tara Smith

Tara Smith is the founder of Tara Smith Law, PC, where she focuses her practice on federal and state tax controversy and select corporate matters. A seasoned tax attorney, Tara represents individuals and businesses in all stages of tax disputes, including audit, administrative appeal, deficiency and refund litigation, and collections management. She also advises clients on entity formation and corporate governance.

Before launching her own practice, Tara spent three years in the tax group at Winstead PC in Dallas, providing both tax controversy and transactional counsel, including structure planning, M&A, funds work, and advising clients on business tax strategy. Prior to joining Winstead, Tara spent time as a law clerk with the U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division and IRS Chief Counsel.

Tara earned her J.D., cum laude, from Baylor Law School, where she received a Special Distinction in Business Planning and multiple awards for excellence in business and tax law. Before entering the legal profession, Tara spent over a decade in corporate sales at global technology firms, supporting clients in the healthcare, finance, and oil & gas industries.
