Financial Aid Programs

Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TTEG):
The Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TTEG) is gift aid that does not have to be repaid. The maximum TTEG for 2006-2007 is $1,100 per quarter (fall, winter, or spring). This state grant is not available for the summer quarter. In order to be eligible for the TTEG, you must demonstrate financial eligibility based on the results of the FAFSA and meet the following criteria of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board:

You cannot be a recipient of an athletic scholarship.
You cannot be a recipient of funding for the purpose of religious vocational training.
You must be a Texas resident who has lived in the State of Texas for the specified 12 months preceding your first enrollment in any college or university.
You must maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Federal Work-Study (FWS):
Federal Work Study is a need-based program, and your eligibility is determined based on the results of the FAFSA. The amount of FWS eligibility awarded is not applied toward your registration expenses. If employed, you will receive a bi-weekly paycheck for the hours actually worked. However, since the law school strongly discourages entering law students from working during their first year, we do not usually offer FWS. If you wish to be considered for FWS, please contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Students receiving FWS awards are not guaranteed a job nor are they committed to a job. You must review the job listings online at www.baylor.edu/student_employment and schedule an interview with the supervisor. Then, if you and the job supervisor agree, you will be hired at minimum wage. The amount of your work-study award will dictate the maximum number of hours per week you are eligible to work. In addition, you may not work more than 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. This is a Baylor policy intended to protect your academic pursuit.

Federal Stafford Loan:
There are two types of Federal Stafford Loads - subsidized and unsubsidized. The government pays the interest for you on the subsidized loan as long as you are enrolled at least half-time (5 quarter hours) and during the six-month grace period. Interest accrues on the unsubsidized loan while you are in school. The interest rate on the Stafford Loan is variable with a cap of 8.25%. An origination/guarantee fee of 3% will be deducted from the amount borrowed from lenders with the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation as the guarantor. If you select an out-of-state lender, the origination/guarantee fee could increase up to 4%. You will be offered loans based on your answer to the loan interest question on the FAFSA.

Stafford Loan and the Quarter System:
For a law student, three-quarters attended equals one academic year. The maximum total for subsidized/unsubsidized Stafford Loan is $18,500 for one academic year. The subsidized portion cannot exceed $8,500.

If you begin law school in the fall quarter, the $18,500 eligibility will be offered for the Fall/Winter/Spring and divided evenly between those quarters.

If you begin law school in the spring quarter, the maximum subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford eligibility will be offered for spring. Summer will be the second quarter of the academic year. You will be offered the maximum subsidized and unsubsidized for summer, less the amount borrowed in the spring quarter. In the Fall, your eligibility for the maximum amounts of subsidized/unsubsidized Stafford loans will renew, and the $18,500 will be divided evenly between the fall, Winter and Spring quarters.

If you begin law school in the summer quarter, the maximum subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford eligibility will be offered for that quarter. In the Fall, your eligibility for the maximum amount of subsidized/unsubsidized Stafford loans will renew, and the $18,500 will be divided evenly between the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.

College Access Loan (CAL):
The College Access Loan is available to Texas residents only and is offered through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The CAL loan has a 5.25% simple interest rate and interest begins to accrue when the loan is disbursed. You may request the cost of attendance minus other financial aid up to $10,000. The application requires a credit-worthy co-signer who must sign the application in the presence of a notary. Principal and interest payments can be deferred if you are enrolled at least half-time (5 quarter hours) and through the six-month grace period.

Private Educational Loans:
If you have borrowed the maximum Stafford eligibility for the academic year, there are several private educational loans that you may pursue. The maximum amount you are allowed to borrow through private loans is the annual cost of attendance less any financial aid awarded for the academic year. The interest rates on the private loans are variable, adjusted quarterly, and begin accruing interest once the loan is disbursed. Repayment of the principal and interest may be deferred for most private alternative loans.

The Office of Financial Aid recommends that each student go to the websites or call the toll free number listed in your Financial Aid Offer booklet to obtain information concerning each loan. Once you have selected a private educational loan, please complete the application on the website or call the toll-free number listed to request an application:
